The earth is not round (which implies a flat disk), it is an imperfect, oblate spheroid (in other words, it is like a squished ball, kind of like a tomato). It is that way due mostly to the laws of space, mass (and type of matter), force, and time. By "tapered at both ends" I suppose you are refering as to what it is that distorts the would-be sphere shape. The reason for this is the equatorial bulge which is formed due to the earth's rotation. This flattening (distortion or oblateness) is caused by many factors primarily of which is angular velocity, density, and elasticity of the mass, in this case, the earth, whose mass (matter) is variable throughout. Those factors are in turn influenced by other factors. These include things like cohesion, friction, coalesce, temperature, and so on.

If all that is too complicated, let's just say that the earth is like a squishy ball being spun fast enough to cause the center to stretch out and bulge a little. (Note: In people, bulges are caused by overeating, but in planets, bulges are caused by a force known as "centrifugal" meaning a force pushing outward from the center).

The Earth is an "oblate spheroid" it assumes that shape because of gravity, not because of any motion. Secondly; it is not "tapered"; it is in fact the opposite of tapered; it is "oblate".

The Earth is not quite spherical, due to what is know as "rotational
flattening." It's not egg-shaped, either, it's shaped more like a pumpkin.

It is because of the gravity of earth itself n sun. Sun has greater force so it tries to pull while earth is just enuf to keep it in its place. Capice?

It's the effect of the four elephants it's standing on, and the flapping movement of the flippers of the space-turtle which supports them.

hahaha.....Earth isn't round due to circular motion

I thought it was flat still.
