Hi to all Tagalog's,I'm a newbie here in the Philippines.I just don't understand why do most Filipino will tend to laugh when they saw me writing something using Chinese?Does it mean that they are making fun at me?Or They are will thought that I'm eccentric???These makes me feel so much insecure hanging out with them. So any idea how can I make many friends here in Philippines.

First of all Tagalog is one of the languages spoken and the people are Filipinos.

It is very easy to mis-judge people when you are in a foreign country. My first view of the Filipino was that they were a rude, arrogant people (don't give me a thumb's down yet-let me finish).
RUDE because as I walked in a restaurant I could hear people saying "too big" yes I am big but I didn't think that these strangers had the right to say it so loud that I could hear it. Fortunately I am not an aggressive person. Later on I learnt that what they were actually saying was "tubig" which is water and sounds exactly the same.
ARROGANT, same restaurant, because they would "hiss" at the waiters. Here I thought that these waiters were only doing their job and were being mis-treated by the patrons. Again I later learnt that this was the accepted way of getting the waiters attention.

See how easy it can be to mis-judge. I would take the advice that's been given you by the 5 people above me.
I would also like to say that if you are 'hanging out' with them you have been accepted into that group.

Hi there foreigner_lady! Welcome to the Philippines!

I'm sure your friends are not laughing at you or your writing in chinese, and i'm pretty much sure that they're not making fun of you. What the others said may be true: that they're just fascinated or amused with your writing in a foreign language. If this happens again, you can just casually ask them what's funny or what's making them laugh so that you know and you're not left in the dark and so that you won't feel like you're the one they're laughing at or making fun of.

Hope you have a great stay here in the Philippines!Ü

Filipinos are really friendly, laughing deosn't necessarily means they're trying to make fun of you, filipinos are happy people...

i agree with most of the posts on this page, they're just fascinated and amused with your skills... better yet, teach them basic chinese writtings, they'd appreciate it..

for centuries, the philippines has been colonized and influenced by many differenct cultures, and being friends with anyone who visits the country, is something filipinos are very good at...

welcome to the philippines buddy!

They're not making fun of you. they're just fascinated.

In learning tagalog, you have to understand its influences: Tagalog is a mixture of Malay, Indian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and American English. Your chinese is useful especially in colloquial finance and food (e.g. sangla, sukli, pansit, lumpia, hopia, siopao, etc.) Don't worry, Filipinos are almost VERY friendly and will be patient enough to teach you the main dialect Tagalog.

Now, I'd be glad if you'd teach me pinyin; I'm a Filipino expat who wants to learn Chinese. And there isn't any Singaporean Chinese here who's willing to teach me the language.

Unfortunately, I'm in Singapore....

I don't think they are laughing at you. I personally do not find anything to laugh about someone writing in a foreign language. Most probably they are just fascinated with what you are writing and would like to learn more about it.

hi and welcome here!
dont be too conscious about that kind of reaction, you know filipinos are very happy people, with a very good sense of humor, we laugh at alomost everything and anything, but dont think that you are the one they are making fun with.
just be friendly, laughh with them, and if u find a filipino friend, bring him alwasy w/ u so that you know whats going on around you. but ,as i say, filipinos are very fun people to be with...ok, smile with them and they will smile back at you.......:)

they're not making fun of you.sometimes, when we get to see something new,we try to relate it with what we have or with what we kno. say you wrote a chinese character, then your friends might think or say "oh,it looks like our letter R" and then they'll smile or laugh. just like that, they don't mean anything by that,.
they're amazed.
