He helps me with various things and looks out for me. He calls me just to make sure that I am OK when he doesn't hear from me in after a while. I just want to thank him for being my friend. (No stupid answers like: Have sex with him.

Well, saying "Thank you" is always a good start. If you want to encourage him, then offer to make dinner for him or something. Ask him if there's anything you can do for him, I agree, NOT SEX! Just something that you do well, mend something, whatever.... Cards are nice, especially if you make it yourself! Good luck.

Just saying thank you can be a good start also a smile can just be enough for him from your words I can see this person really cares about you so have you ever checked if he loves you? ask your self that question.
Valentin's day is soon try to make him something special like hanging out together or something.
If not and you are just friends try to care about him as he do and show him that you care about him as he do.
Treat him nice because you have a treasure hard to find keep it and never let it go let feel appreciated that will be your thanks for him

Say it and buy him a nice thank you card,or a gift card to a store that he likes. Or a dinner over.

give him a thank-you card,there's plenty in the stores.or give him something he will like,maybe a book or cd with a thank-you written on the front...

You simply say thank you at the appropriate time---some people can be nice without an alterior motive--it does happen--so say thanks. Don't say or do anything else.
