I've been trying for 2 days now to use my laptop, but it can't seem to get past the screen where it says there was an error and it gives you the option to start windows in normal mode, safe mode, etc. I can't even get it to load up in safe mode, when i make a choice, it always ends up back on this screen. I really don't want to have to take it to a repair shop cos I've heard horror stories at how much they charge, does anyone know of anything I can do to get it to load? Any keys I can press when I switch it on to load it up?

First of all, do NOT format the drive like someone suggested. Formatting deletes everything!
Start up with the laptop with the Windows CD in, boot from the CD. Once it "finds" Windows installed, then do a repair. That should fix it.
If this doesn't work, find a tech you trust to save your data before any other repairs are done. If you don't trust them, find someone else. It doesn't have to be expensive.

If you have no data or games that you wish to save then you can use the restore CD that should have come with the laptop. If not then put the operating system CD into the laptop and make sure that the CD is the first boot device in the bios settings. restart the laptop and hit any key when prompted to start from CD. If this works you may find that you will have to reload some device drivers

look the windows lost some system files that is important to load the windows that's why it doesn't want to load but the best way is to restore the system if its restore or try to reinstall the windows and how i will tell u 1- put the windows CD if its xP it will load by itself and tell u to press any key to start so press any key
2- it will start loading windows files
3-it will ask u if u want to repair the windows try that first and if it didn't work try the same steps but this time u will press Esc
4-it will ask u to choose the driver u want to install the windows and the it will ask u to format don't do it or u will delete all the files but choose leave the files the same i think the last one and then it will ask u to change the windows directory and then it will start to insatll the windows

a driver is corrupted in the laptop system which needs to be repaired i guess any person who has a bit knowledge on laptops could fix it.
Formatting it would be the most appropriate way i guess if you don't want to format it as it has some important files try to transfer the files to a PC by making the hard disk as slave using a USB-USB wire

i agree with booting off the cd rom, and choosing the repair option, this will put you into the repair console (looks a bit like dos,) you might need to enter the administrator password. then type in chkdsk /f. this will attempt to repair nay corrupt files. if that does cure it a reload of xp is required.
