A good portion of the chemical energy is wasted as byproduct of cellular respiration. The excess energy from catabolism that is not immediately used for cellular work is stored as compounds such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP). When these compounds are not needed right away, the body can readily convert the excess energy to fatty acids in the adipose tissues.
