I do! Tee hee. Just kidding. Well I am an artist. I know what I consider art. It's very subjective though. It's like beauty. It's in the eye of the beholder. I didn't used to like modern art because I didn't understand it. Some of it I still think is a case of the emperor's new clothes (people pretend to see all this deep meaning in it so they appear intelligent but the reality is it's just a dot on a blank canvas). Some people will stick a toilet on a wall & call it art. Who knows. The point of art is to make an impact. Something may not be beautiful but may have shock value & be seen as art in this way. There is really no right or wrong answer. It's a matter of taste & opinion. Art is such a wide label. It could apply to anything from Renaissance paintings to an ad for diapers. Commercial art, fine art, tattoo art. We are surrounded by art & design all the time. Even graffiti is a form of art.
Modern art developed as a reaction to realism & classicism. Once the camera was invented we didn't have to paint things exactly as they were, the camera could do that. We might as well depict something different: what we imagine, what we feel. Art became more original. It became about brushstrokes, patterns, statements, rather than slavish representations of the world.
Art to me is anything that I find beautiful & that moves me. I prefer Expressionism & Art Nouveau. They have influenced my own style but I have a unique & quirky style of portraiture that is quite unlike anyone else. Gustav Klimt's The Kiss is my favourite painting of all time. I love Frida Kahlo, Edvard Munch, Egon Schiele. I also like abstract artists like Picasso (still partly representational & figural but a unique expression of reality), Kandinsky (fabulous colours). It's like music. Some people like rap music. Some like classical. It's all music. Even a jingle in a TV commercial is "music" but is it a masterpiece? It's open to interpretation.
So many elements that comprise art: composition, colour, contrast, line, shape, texture, pattern, message. These elements come into play no matter what it is from realism to abstraction.
You decide what is art. We all do. Art is whatever it is to you. It's whatever you like. Whatever you choose to hang on your wall. Whatever speaks to you. Whatever you find beautiful.
Art critics can pretend to be the authority on art. They can try to tell you what is good or isn't, what is real art & what isn't but you can make up your own mind.

Hey guy what's up? i am a mixed martial artist, i have found that if are wanting to be in all around better shape that the grappling arts are perfect for that. As far as wanting to be a stunt man, i think that the juijitsu would help with over all flexability and dexterity.you said that your are a taller guy and you already take kickboxing. So that takes care of stand up. Even though you don't LIKE grappling what if that situation came up. The point I was trying make with the length you posses is your long legs which are very good tools in arm bars and triangles. However, i'm like you I had rather stand and bang

Many of these answers have some truth to them. A valid assessment is made by the observer, does it move him to action, including deep healthful thought. Another is the critic; does it have weight, or , in other words, will it last and give reason to argument in favor of why it is. Personally, I think if it doesn't cause a deep emotional tie and a strong desire to reason the existence for ti it is probably at best, illustrative of "an" art, but, when both of those elements of construct are present, it is probaly going to be considered art by one group of people and pure crap by another. Art creates conflict and security.

I'm a landscape photographer, and I've been to a lot of exhibits. Art is what you make of it. This is why there are so many different types of art; to suit the many different tastes, and preferences. If there were only one type of art, there would not be very many people that are into it. Since there are so many different types, almost anything can be perceived as art, by anyone, and on the opposite side of the token, almost anything can be perceived as crap by anyone. It's not so much WHO decides what is art, as it is, WHAT is perceived as art.

It is the definition of Art, that will be the base for decision. Then is the turn for Consensus to decide it. Lastly, it is you who will invest time in this direction.
Have a nice time.

But it has got me to thinking...
Who decides WHAT is ART, and What is Not???
I say I do!!! I say....Every person who is interested..
That it is so personal, So individual. Just like our critiques of each other! Some like what they see, some do NOT!

interesting question! well, that depends ; generally speaking everybody and nobody because some factors are determined by the author, reader, critic etc. but the main importance lays in the work itself; a literary text, for example, has its own target and meaning which cannot be controlled by the author or the reader; it is its own creator

You do. I do. The creator. The viewer. Anybody who thinks it is... then it is. I think life is art. Time- a canvas. Our existance is our brush and our thoughts are our paint.
