I think Sean Penn is better. He is really good in "Mystic River" and "21 grams". Kevin Costner has some lousy acted movies like "Rumor has it", "Waterworld", "Body Guard" and "Guardian".

I'm going to have to say Sean Penn. Kevin Costner, no matter what, always seems like Kevin Costner. He doesn't become the character. Sean Penn, on the other hand, does a better job at character acting.

He may not be the most popular person, but Sean Penn is without a doubt a great actor, he can go from one spectrum to another. I have never seen him in a bad movie. Kevin Costner is also good, but I have to say in my opinion not as powerful a actor.

Sean Penn... he has proven that he can play different roles with credible performances. Besides, Penn is a nicer and down-to-earth person to meet at screenings. Costner is a snob!

Sean Penn. Easy.

Costner's list of flops is much longer. He's bombed with pretty much everything since he had that 4 flick run of Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, No Way Out and Dances With Wolves.

Don't get me wrong, Field of Dreams and Dances With Wolves are two of my favorite movies, but I think they would have been excellent even if Costner hadn't starred in them as long as they starred someone halfway decent.

Lancaster stole the show in Field of Dreams anyway. His cameo was a virtuoso performance. The scene in Moonlight Graham's office moves me to tears everytime.

Penn otoh has continued to put out critically acclaimed, well-made movies. Last thing of his I saw was Mystic River, which I didn't particularly care for but I acknowledge was well-made.
