The Republican Party started as a third party, but inherited much of the membership and structure of the Whig party.

If there were a modern third party it would most likely inherit significant parts of one of the existing parties and we would wind up again with a two-party system.

The Libertarians have generally shown themselves unable to put together a platform that can win a significant presence in Congress (essential to success of any major party) or elect a president or make any major changes in the way government is carried out. They have some good ideas, but no cohesive program or structure that can put them in the driver's seat.

So I would say the answer to your question is "yes and no."

By the way I am a Republican most of the time, but have had a few recent disappointments in my party.

I would hope at some point citizens can make their voices heard by someone.

People are fed up with the two party system. It may even be the reason for this democracy to have such a low voter turn out. The only problem that a third party has, is they have such a low advertising budget. I'll be interested to see if the libertarian party will form to its potential, in the mean time I'll be searching for the definition of such a party...
