I have never lived in LA so I cannot compare. Houston does have a active gay community. Most activities center around a part of town called Montrose. Montrose is centrally located just west of downtown. The 800 block of Pacific St. has a few gay bars. We have every kind of bar you can think of from a leather bar to country to piano to dance. The entire Montrose area is dotted with restaurants, shops, and galleries. The population of the neighborhood has been changing. Because of the proximity to downtown many young straight couples are moving in and rents and prices of houses are going up. We do have a gay pride celebration in June with a parade at night. Several parties with the proceeds going to charity are usually planned for Easter Weekend. There are several community organizations for what ever you may be into. Click here for:

Like the other responses above, the Montrose area is well known not only here but across the US as a major gay community. Yes, many young heterosexuals are moving in, but there seems to be peace . I live about two blocks from Montrose Blvd and love it. Gay bars, straight bars, fantastic restaurants that aren't overly priced !! I am a straight female, my neighbors are gay men... and I could not ask for nicer neighbors. Their friends are fun and cool, too. Houston is so very diverse that there's not much shock value about anything here. If you are a decent human who minds your own business, you'll fit in just fine. But... if you are a gangster or an illegal immigrant... run for the hills !!! BTW.... welcome to the Bayou City. February is rodeo month , so get ready to see Texas tradition in full stride. Mardi Gra is going on in nearby Galveston and that is always a great time. So, ya'll come on , honey, and stay awhile... we'll have barbecue and chicken fried steak waiting for you !!! :)

Houston is an exceedingly distinctive city, yet i would not circulate around keeping hands with my bf in purely any component to city. in case you're searching for for extra gay friendly factors, examine out the neighborhoods around the intersection of Montrose & Westheimer. it relatively is seen the gay component to city. i'm confident you will detect some advantageous lofts downtown that would additionally be notably gay friendly. there are various gay golf equipment on the city too. i think of you would be happy there. I enjoyed living in Houston. I moved away some years in the past however.

Montrose is still the unofficial gay center of Houston, but more and more of us are moving to areas like the Heights, Oak Forest, Meyerland, Sugar Land, etc. We have gay theatre, gay music (Bayou City Performing Arts, the Pride Band), gay sports organizations, gay churches--pretty much what you'd find in any major US city. The bookstores have closed, but you can find glbt reading material at almost any of the chain stores (e.g., Borders). All in all, a bit like West Hollywood, only with more humidity (but lower prices at the restaurants). Welcome!

Gay life in Houston is interesting. Some people are still very closed minded and prejudice. But if you wanna feel right at home, got to Montrose area, or the galleria. E-mail me if you want some more info. You'd think i'm gay. but actulally, i'm straight. I just know alot of people.
