Then what is it?? A lifestyle is a way of life. If you are an alcoholic you live an alcoholic lifestyle. If you are a doctor you live a medical lifestyle. If you are an educator you live an educational lifestyle. If you are a heterosexual you live a heterosexual lifestyle. IF YOU ARE A HOMOSEXUAL YOU LIVE A HOMOSEXUAL LIFESTYLE>
I am homosexual ... i dont take offense of the term lifestyle. I am pround of being a homosexual ... and I am proud of living life as a homosexual. I LIVE A HOMOSEXUAL LIFESTYLE>

Does a heterosexual live a heterosexual lifestyle you ask? Does a heterosexual marry a woman. Have children. Go around as a heterosexual couple. YES.

I am a professional percussionist. I live a percussionists' lifestyle. It doesn't have ANYTHING to do with who I'm in love with!! A heterosexual person leading a "heterosexual lifestyle"? That makes no sense.
I disagree with you.
edit: Hello? not ALL heterosexuals have kids! And then you have the gay and lesbian couples that DO. Your theory is full of holes.
What about a FTM who marries a woman? Is that person leading a transgendered "lifestyle"? But wait, this person is now a male, so wouldnt it be a heterosexual "lifestyle" now?
My point is, that one's lifestyle has nothing to do with who they love.

I think your missing the point.
You can be a homosexual, thats fine, but that doesnt mean you have to lead the typical lifestyle that goes with being gay.
As for an alcoholic, you can be one but not live a typical alcoholic lifestyle (be unemployed, live in a dirty house if one at all etc)
There are many who live normal lives, have good jobs, who have a drinking problem.
Even straight people can live an "outragous" lifestyle more commonly associated with a gay person, but that doesnt make them gay.
Im not quite sure what you are trying to get at when you say you dont take offence to the term lifestyle, no one has tried to offend your choice of lifestyle.
I think your confusing lifestyle with sexual preference.

Well I'm not going to bother to answer your previous question because it gives me a headache. :)
But as for the word lifestyle... The online dictionaries define lifestyle as: a way of life or style of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or group. Now, yes the phrase "values of a person" is in there. However, when people use it to talk about "the gay lifestyle" they are talking about the style of living and the values and attitudes of a group. In the common vernacular the term is used in order to lump all LGBT people together into one way of life with one set of values.
Usually the lifestyle that people are picturing when using this term includes all sorts of behavior that the mainstream public finds distasteful and immoral. The behaviors they think of are things like unsafe sex with multiple partners, clubbing every night, and drug use. Obviously this does not describe the style of living, attitudes, and values of the entire LGBT population.
It's not only straight people who think like this. One of the things I often hear from young people when they are coming out is a fear that they're going to have to find a way to fit into the lifestyle I described above.
So, the term "gay lifestyle" is actually very limiting at the moment because in this day and age it does not describe a diverse group of people with diverse values and attitudes. Athough I like women, the life I lead would never be described as a "gay lifestyle" according to the common use of the phrase.
P.S. Your other examples of lifestyles also do not fit the definition of a lifestyle because none of those groups have pervasive attitudes, values, and behaviors that unify them into a uniform lifestyle. Just like homosexuals have very different attitudes and values, so do heterosexual people. You can see that right here in this group. People come in here treating us nicely, cruelly, and in between. This behavior is usually based on their values, and the way they express it is based on their individual attitudes.
P.P.S. Now you are perpetuating the myth of the heterosexual lifestyle. There has been no such thing as the traditional family being in the majority since the 1950's. Since that time the number of single mothers, childless couples, single men, grandparents raising grandchildren, divorced couples, etc etc has increased exponentially. 50% of marriages end up in divorce now. That means there's a lot of non-traditional families out there. Heterosexuals no longer follow the narrow path through adulthood of marrying and having children. In addition, heterosexual relationships are just as varied as homosexual ones. Some straight couples date at a young age and get married. Others run around and party for years before settling down. There is no one heterosexual lifestyle.

I am not really bothered by "lifestyle" as I am by "sexual preference".
Lifestyle does sound like a way you would decorate your living room.
Preference sounds like one would hump whatever is available.

If all or most of your identity is tied up in how you like your sex, then yes--- you live a homosexual lifestyle.

I agree with you. "lifestyle" is not offensive. I think many take offense to it because more often than not it is coupled with the word "choice".... so when someone says "lifestyle choice" it becomes offensive.
Even without the word "choice" added, however... all the examples of lifestyles you mentioned are CHOSEN lifestyles. It thus makes me believe that a lifestyle is inherently chosen and thus a poor word to chose to describe someone's sexual orientation.

I do take offense, because "lifestyle" implies that there is just one way to be gay, or lesbian, or bi. It leaves a lot of LGBT people out, and is meant to.
