I recently bought a 2.0 ghz white macbook with 1 gig of RAM, and have taken to doing some video editing and such on it. While it is fairly fast, it takes a good deal of time applying video affects to movies, and when I used iDVD to make a menu for a movie, it took a long time to render the menu (I'm not talking about burning here) and other related activities. How much effect will adding 1 gig of RAM to it (it currently has 1 gig) have? It currently has a matched pair of 512s, so I would have to buy 2 1 gigs, so it would be around $250.

First you have to go and see how much memory your motherboard can handle. You could put in the extra memory but if the 1 Gb is the max, then adding more is a waste of money. I am sure if it is new that it should take 2Gb, but check your manual first.

If it does take 2 Gb, then your multi-tasking will proceed faster. You will be able to listen to music and edit now, without the music cutting off now and then. It will be great on editing with the extra memory to use for computing. But I googled the site and it looks like you can not add more memory. But this was last year's review and maybe the newer ones something changed. But check on the memory capacity anyway.

What's missing? Not much, but the MacBook does come with integrated graphics rather than the faster discrete adapter that gamers and graphics pros will want. And it has no ExpressCard, PC Card, or memory-card slots, nor a dial-up modem.

It will have a huge a effect on your video rendering, trust me...

I run on a imac g5:
-2gb ddr sdram
-dual 2.7 ghz

and I can have DVD studio pro, firefox, AND Final Cut Pro open at the same time and it will still run smoothly. Rendering is really easy, and only takes a few minutes, if not seconds.

Note that I have the same amount of ram as what you'll have if you end up buying the sticks.

Dude, for sure adding another gig of ram would make it faster, but it won't be twice as fast (eg it won't be 5 mins if it took 10 mins to apply the affects)... It's best if you can max up your mac (eg stuff if with the maximum amount of ram possible) to see the full benefits of ram, and get a faster and bigger hard-drive. With the ram and hard-drive puffed up, you'll be set to play with your videos. Have fun.

Most times when you add 1gb of RAM, your computer becomes quite fast. I think that with your video editing, it just takes time for your program to process the effects. 1gb of RAM would make it faster yes, but it wouldnt speed up the process.
