Presuming he is 18 and is capable of moving out but doesn't because he has it good... 1/3 of his paycheck should be given to mom & dad. That's about $360 - $450 a month. He won't find a room for rent for that and he has the luxury of having mom's home cooking.

On the same note.. if he is attending college it should be 1/4 of his paycheck.

A note to mom & dad... if your child is paying full rent, it would be best for you to put away at least 1/2 of that rent in a high interest savings account for him (without him knowing) and be able to sercretly save for the day he really does move out. In one way it's a reward for having help with your mortgage and a reward for him paying for his stay.

Good luck.

The more you charge the sooner he will move out. But if there are 4 people in the home, consider charging him 1/4 of the average rent in the area PLUS 1/4 of the utilities. (He probably uses more utilities than a child with separate laundry and hot showers.)

If he's making mimimum wage and he does a good job of cleaning up after himself and his dog...maybe $10 to $15 a week. Give him a chance to better himself and get out on his own.
