There are two ways...
if you had it on it will turn off automatically
or..
hold down the center button and menu button at same time for 10 secs.

If it hasn't turned itself off by now, the only way to force it to go into sleep mode (without using external devices) is to press and hold the Pause button. If you look at the face, below the screen there's a large circle with a small circle in the middle. At the bottom of the large circle, there should be a triangle with two vertical lines. That's the Pause button. BTW, the Menu/Center combo actually forces a reboot, which will just turn it back on.

scroll down to sleep and press the middle button and it will turn off.

if it's an actual i pod...just hold down the play/pause on the wheel until the screen goes black /blank
