An elegy is simply a lyric poem written upon the occasion of death. By lyric, I mean that the poem is mainly about the subject (in this case, the person who died) and not a narrative; elegies don't usually tell stories, but are more focused on who the person was. There is no set meter or rhyme scheme, although Thomas Gray's "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard's" quatrain stanza is often called elegiac.

Strictly speaking,an elegy must be both mournful and Greek.
