What is the best way to temporarily soundproof one room of my house?

By temporarily, I mean without having to do any invasive procedures, and I'd like to keep costs as low as possible since I'm a student. I've been researching, but there are so many methods and they all seem so expensive, so I figured I'd turn for help here, thanks in advance.

Styrofoam and a staple gun with some of that spray foam in between the cracks. Or maybe some insulation under that first. Good Luck

You are right, all the effective methods are expensive! The most inexpensive method (if you are trying to keep sound out) is earplugs. Otherwise, are you trying to keep sound out or keep sound in? Why do you want a quieter room?

To deaden sound, you want a material that is dense and has a disorganized structure. So, thick sheets of particle board is your cheapest bet. If you use multiple sheets, don't bind them with nails if you can avoid it (the nails will conduct sound). Use wood glue. You can also do alternating sheets of particle board separated by used carpet. Use old carpet from a renovation, or discarded leftovers from a carpet store. You will need to use nails or screws here, but the sound deadening value is worth it. Of course, you will need to construct something out of all this material that is as big as the room you are are trying to soundproof! So, this means a LOT of particleboard and carpet even for a small room. Even if you are just trying to do one or two walls, it is a big project.

Basically, buy earplugs.

Impossible. I'm very sorry to say it. This is the reason there is a market for private sound booths for homes. The best you can hope for is a minor amount of muffling by covering up the door and such. Our voices talk at 30 to 55 decibels normally. A common interior wall protects against about 30 decibels.

Look around and make friends with a carpet layer, they quite often have to take up old carpet. They usually put it in a dumpster. Probably 3 houses and you will have enough of decent carpet to line the walls and drapes for the doors.

Or another idea, but more dangerous, 4X8 or 4X7, depending on the height of your ceiling, 2 inch star foam. But thats money a short $100.00, get a roll of duct tape and tape them together, and put some furniture up against them. The air pressure will help hold them in place.

Don`t smoke or have an open flame in the room. If the cheap grade of that will kill you if it catches on fire. The fumes will get you. You can cut it with a sharp butcher knife, or bread knife.

Can you afford a few sheets of styrofoam?
If yes, I would decorate the sheets with fabric and pictures and whatever you want to display. I would stand the sheets side by side against the wall fastening them down with some tiny dabs of adhesive. If you would move you can remove them, fix the small holes in the wall, and all will be well again.

I don't really understand what you want.
If you want to keep sound from going out or coming in, you should simply close all windows and door of that room. Try to cover chinks in a door and windows by dirty laundry or waste paper.
But I think, even by doing this, you still can't completely soundproof a room.
