Gelatin is supposed to make nails strong. So having jelly or emptied out gelatin capsules would help. Actually you probably should have multi-vitamins in gelatin capsules. As hair and nails are really barometers for your general health, make sure your are healthy otherwise. Exercise keeps the blood circulating to the extremities, so thats another thing to do.

The answer is simple. You should eat better and more nutritious foods. The lack of these healthy foods is the cause of brittle nails. An apple a day will keep those white spots away.

Use a nail conditioner like NutraNail and use handcream. Vaseline used to have a hand-and-nail formula. I don't know if they still have it, but any hand cream is likely to help. If you can't find NutraNail there's probably another nail conditioner in the nail aisle of any drug store.

Both of the above help because they soften the nails a little.

Also, it may help to use non-acetone nail polish remover (one with conditioner in it if possible). Even with that, though, wash your hands immediately after using polish remover.
