This question is mainly from those who attended school during the 60's and earlier.

When I was in Kindergarten, I would write and cut with my left hand and my teacher would correct me and tell me that I was wrong. She then noticed that I had a lot of problems with coloring, cutting, writing, etc. The teacher then sent a note home to my parents saying that she wanted to put me in special classes because she discovered that I was having problems. They put me in the special classes, but I was kicked out because I was too smart and they saw nothing wrong with it.

Who else has had the experience of a stupid teacher thinking that you were wrong for using your left hand?
Oh yes, I now write with my right hand, but I do everything else left handed. :0D

I had the flip side. My handwriting has always been bad. They now tell me it is genetic. So along about 6th. grade they decided that I should have been left handed (not so, if I lost my right hand, I'd starve). And started making me write left handed. Didn't work out.
I found my own solution. Instead of writing, I draw the letters as if they were little pictures hooked together. Or I print using a calligraphy pen.

I did have a strange ting in first grade though. I came down with chicken pox, and was out of school for a while. That put me behind in learning to read. They put me in the slow learner's group. I asked if I could do my assignments and the assignments of the next higher group as well. This was allowed with great protestations of doubt. After proving that I was ready for the next group, I did the same thing again and ended up by mid term in the highest group.

BUT

According to my records, I was a slow learner. So I had to repeat this fiasco for the next five years.

By the time I was in high school, they had started using standardized tests (yes, this was quite some time ago) and I discovered that I am really good at taking standardized tests, whether I know anything about the subject or not. So then they wanted to put me in with the "smart" kids. My parents did not allow that, bless their memory, and that turned out to be a wise decision.

I have to say that in all the years in public schools and college, there were no more than half a dozen teachers and professors that are memorable because they were very good at what they did. About an equal number plus a couple more really should have been doing something else, and the rest have sort of faded into a faceless gray nothingness.

I thought that was a thing of the old days. My father was born in 1920. He attended a Catholic school and got smacked with a ruler all the time for using his left hand. For the rest of his life he wrote with his right hand but did everything else with his left hand.
He said he would have been a millionaire except for that. He may have been right. lol

My daughter is left handed and I would never think to correct her. In fact I try to insist she use her left hand more than she does. She bowls right handed, plays catch as a right hander.

I didn't go to school then, (I started kindergarten in '89), but in Texas, they made us write with our right hands. They said that if you were left handed, you were abnormal and needed to go to special classes.

yes..ok no. But i wrote from right to left when i was young and they tried putting me in special classes.

I went on to college scoring a 27 on act passing all State tests in the 99%.

Hick towns...I'm glad I got out of that town early.

my father is like that, he writes using the right hand but does all the others things like eating and using tools like screwdriver and hammer using the right hand. and he does everything well.

i researched about it and from what i have learned, it has something to do with the brain development. somehow some people's brain like yours and my dad's has a balanced load on its two hemisphere. the right hemisphere can do what the left hemisphere can do and vice versa.
