I have to write an article for the groundbreaking ceremony of a new campus for my college. The vice-president of my country (not USA) was the Guest of Honour and I'm just having almost total writer's block right now...Any tips?

Of course you're not from the USA. You have perfect grammar and spelling. (Just kidding... I'm American, but I'm particular about spelling and grammar).

I find that once I have a beginning, I can handle the rest. So, I would start by quoting a particularly moving (and short) comment by the Vice-president. Then, I would move in to describing the VP's appearance, going into a story sort of format. Then, move into the details about the groundbreaking.

It should flow pretty well. Kinda like this example (replacing the capitalized letters with appropriate words and descriptions):

"Bla bla bla," said NATION's vice-president, NAME, as he stood in front of the ADJECTIVE, ADJECTIVE NOUN that graces the future home of our COLLEGE's new campus. DESCRIBE THE WEATHER, a perfect background for VICE-PRESIDENT's speech.

VICE-PRESIDENT highlighted the groundbreaking at LOCATION for the COLLEGE's new campus last DAY OF THE WEEK. It was a memorable occasion for everyone in attendance.

(Just in case I wasn't very clear in my description, it would go like this: --Hopefully I didn't make a fool of myself--)
"In these halls, you will learn things you never knew," said Where-ever-you-live's vice-president, Very-important Person, as he stood in front of the beautiful, park-like landscape that graces the future home of our Iwanna Learnalot's new campus. The sun shone brightly through the clouds, a perfect background for Very-important Person's speech.
Very-important Person highlighted the groundbreaking at the new East Place-I-live campus for Iwanna Learnalot's new campus last Thursday afternoon. It was a memorable occasion for everyone in attendance.)

I hope that helped. Best of luck to you. Sounds like a cool story.

Decide which is more important, eg, what would make ppl want to read your artcle- the fact that a president is coming to your school or that your school has a new campus? I personally think the first one, but hey it's your story & u have to decide on the angle it takes. After you've done that, write a catchy introduction and the rest will just flow!

Before you go with Jacksmom's boilerplate, you might want to decide what is politically allowable to write. If you want to get attention as a writer, then write something that is either insightful or inciteful. Of course, this will vary depending on if you live in a country where you'll be arrested for sedition or sued into bankruptcy.
