In my opinion, three things led to the defeat of the Republicans at the end of the Spanish Civil War:
1. Poor military leadership (Republican)
2. The combined military strength and resources of the Fascists under Franco, with the German and Italian assistance
3. The infighting amongst the Communists, Socialists, and Anarchists that was partly due to Russian interference

Because of their alliance with Russians, the anti-fascists found themselves without support when WWII ended. After that the fascists were courted by the West because the West was afraid of having a Socialist government id Western Europe. Without support and cut off from the rest of the worls the anti-fascist forces were exterminated.
