In general if the child is under the age of 21 it is illegal to give them alcohol. An exception would be during a religious ceremony.

Well the drinking age is 21 not 10 or 5. So I would say no it is not legal to give your child alcohol. I do remember my Dad let me taste a little beer when I was 10, but he didn't let me have anymore than that. If the parent is smart and knows not to give the child the whole bottle of beer then okay. But as you know...most of the time people are pretty irresponsible.

If it's illegal to buy alcohol for a minor, it's probably illegal to give alcohol to your kid.

Even if it's a religious ceremony, don't they have alternatives? I remember at church where I got to drink water instead of wine when they did that last supper thing.

Not if your child is under 21. There are some exceptions for religious services, but for social matters, no, you can't.

I would have to think that it is illegal with the exception of a religious practice, like communion in some Christian churches.
