A combination of things: He's shown himself to be arrogant at times, and that tends to rub people the wrong way. With the richest contract in baseball, he should consistently put up the best numbers - when he doesn't, he fails to live up to his contract. He seems at times to care more about his contract than about what he can do for a team - he priced himself out of the range of most teams who could actually use his ability. Despite his money and bravado, he continually fails to perform in the playoffs. He sulks. And, yes, he trashed Derek Jeter, who is one of the classiest and best shortstops in the history of baseball (though the Wizard still rules!).

That being said, he puts up fantastic numbers and is one of the best players in the game. But, on-field production is always measured against off-field personality (see Barry Bonds) so being a great ballplayer doesn't necessarily make you popular or well-liked.

It's a very simple scoring system to determine if you are likely to "hate" ARod.

Start at 0 points:

+1 if you believe in "clutch" ability
+2 if you've used the phrase "Captain Clutch" in describing other players
-1 if you realize that runs in the 5th inning are equal to runs in the 9th inning
+1 if he plays for your team and it hasn't won a World Series in over 5 years
+5 if he plays for your team and there is at least 2 players on it that have won a World Series with your team in the past 20 years
-5 if you realize that individual players don't win World Series on their own
+2 if you read the NY Post
-2 if you read Baseball Prospectus
+10 if you ignore all the positive contributions he makes to the team, and just remember what he did last night/week/month/season
+3 if you think $25million is too much for a player to earn in any sport
+2 if you think that $19.6million, however, is perfectly acceptable for a player to earn

If your score is greater than +3, then you will probably hate ARod.

After he signed his record 252 million dollar contract with Texas he came off as being arrogant after saying to a newspaper reporter that Derek Jeter wasn't as good as him. It's been following him since even now as a Yankee. Since signing with the Yanks his postseason statistics and his bad fielding last year has not helped his popularity.

unpopular because of his huge contract with little fielding skill at 3rd base and virtually nonexistent come playoff time when the Yanks need him the most!

The Yankee fans want him to be the best. He is not doing nearly as well as he was in Texas or Seattle, so they are upset. Other teams are willing to take him if they want to trade him though.

Due to his lack of poor post season showings and regular season miscues he has lost favor with a few fans.

They expect more out of him considering his paycheck.
