When I was 16, I marched right into the largest paper in our area (The Chronicle in Centralia, WA), asked for an appointment with the editor-in-chief and presented him with my portfolio from the school newspaper, and told him I wanted a job. He evaluated my performance, sent me home with an assignment to think of worthwhile stories (I did) and returned with a list the next day. He gave me my first assignment from that list, and I've been a "real" journalist ever since. Quit the school paper, finally quit the school (moved, then graduated) and have a full-time job at a paper near my new home.

If you want it, you have to try for it. Write up pieces freelance for papers. Write up papers for your portfolio, if you can't write for a publication. March down there with a portfolio, and you'll never have to fetch coffee or look over a shoulder. You'll be equal with everyone else on the staff--well, the lower end of the staff, anyway.

Journalism is a great career. It's interesting, it's exciting, you get to meet new people and pry into their lives. You get to talk to people in all sorts of positions, from all walks of life.

Good luck to you. If you need any advice, email me. =D

Community newspapers are a great way to launch your career in journalism. They offer space for development while giving you all the time to discover which section of news coverage you are really good at. As for the experience, most post that require more than 10 yrs experience are usually senior or managerial, so, a person is only a teenager until nineteen, take away 10 yrs and you would have been a journalist since you were nine, highly unlikely lol! But hey, when you finally make that big break, be sure to keep us posted. We all wish you the best of luck!

You need to work on your spelling and grammar before you worry about becoming a journalist.
