there is a part in the movie where the kid yells "Hey Lady!" and she doesn't respond this makes me believe it wasn't her real name

She does say in the movie that her name is Lady Goodman. I think that was her real name because afterwards she says to William, "Now you know all my secrets." And then at the end when Russell comes to William's house he says that he didn't even know Penny's real name, and William gives this cute smile, implying that at least he believed he'd been given her real name.

Penny Lane wasn't her real name. She named herself after the Beatle's song "Penny Lane", which was a street in Liverpool where John and Paul hung out as kids.
