Everytime I am at the net, it seems like I have really slow reactions, and I can never get my racquet in the right spot at the right time/hold the grip right. How can I strengthen my volleys and overall make them better? I am on my college tennis team, so I know more than the basics on tennis, any tips you might know would help!

get a ball machine and set it at a high frequency and hit a few hndred balls. while you do it look at your racquet and adjust your grip accordingly to hit the bal in the right place. the only thing i think would help is hitting so many volleys that you don't even think about racquet placement andjus tknow where the ball is gonna go.

Well I mean its sorta hard to tell you what you're doing wrong. And you say you know the basics. But sometimes you need to go back to the basics to reinforce your game. I personally think you are "stopping-short" too late.

Do all the the things the guys said up there. Try anticipating better and also picking your net points wisely. We are not all volley masters.

I dunno what you mean by strengthen volleys. I mean do you want to hit them harder? You don't swing at volleys you let the ball come to you. You have to postion yourself and you correct stance to get the most out of a volley. And this is not the only thing.

Angle the volley.

Example.
He hits it cross court you return it down the line he runs gets it you are already at the net angle the volley away from your opponent.

Also your wrist should be "laid back".
Like if you extend your hand palm up.
Make a fist.
And curl ur wrist up.

Thats the postion ur hand should be in.

Also your volley punch should not go past ur waist cuz then u will be swinging and you don't swing on volleys.

Maybe ur just 2 close to the net even?

I dunno I didn't mean to insult u in anyway just trying to help.

At your level of play, it's going to be something pretty minor, like making sure your raquet meets the ball in front of you. But your grip is more likely the culprit, (guessing you play a very western grip- huge topspin!) and every volley makes the raquet spin in your hand or else hits it into the net. Just like changing your grip on a backhand, concentrate on moving the raquet during the point as you approach the net, and set yourself up for a fundamentaly sound volley. The basics will carry you a long way.
Good Luck!

Stick to the continental grip. The best tip I have on volleying is keeping the racket in front of you and up at chest level. Hit the volleys with a firm wrist.

1) Keep your racket head up and in front of you.

2) Punch, don't swing. This means if you don't have to stretch, keep your elbow close to your body.

3) Get a quicker read on the ball. Watch your opponents shoulders to try and anticipate his shot direction. If you hit a solid approach, the lack of time will make you opponent tend to hit down the line. Think line first, cross second. If your opponent has a lot of time, he can better choose crosscourt or down the line. Learn your opponents tendencies on which pass he prefers if he is given time, both with his forehand and with his backhand.

4) Watch that Edberg guy. He was the best.
