depends which one you are playing. in the earlier games, yes you could. in later versions, no.

In FFX you can rename Tidus by talking to one of the kids in the beggining of the game and I agree with the others.

FFX-you can rename Tidus, but none of the other characters
FFVIII-you can rename all the playable characters
FFIII-you can rename all the playable characters
FFVII-yes, you can rename some characters like Cloud

I know that you can for sure in FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX, but I don't think you can in any of the others (well, except for FFXI of course, but that doesn't count).

I know you can in FFVI. You can't in FFIII. I think you can in FFVII.
