I am 39 weeks and 5 days pregnant. At my last check (2/2) I was 3cm and 75% effaced. I have completely lost my mucous plug as of yesterday. Over the last few weeks I have had several episodes of minor contractions and sharp "knife-like" cervical pain, which I have been told is normal. Tonight, however, everytime I walk, move, etc the pain is there and is HORRIBLE. There is so much pressure on my pelvis which is just making this whole thing worse. Before, these pains went away, but now they are just getting worse. I am not having contractions, although this is my first baby so I am not 100% sure what I should be expecting, but I am having menstrual-like cramps, but I have had those on and off for about 7 days now. Also, the baby is moving more right now than I can ever remember. Should I just sit it out and see what happens tonight? Or should I make plans to go in? We just got about 6 inches of snow, so making a trip IS a big deal right now.

Ummm I'd say call your L&D and talk to a nurse, to me it sounds like you should go but if you need reassurance call. If the pains are not going away and are getting worse I'd be in the car on my way to the hospital. Good luck!!!

How far away is the hospital? Loosing your mucus plug doesn't necessarily mean you are actually ready to deliver soon. Contractions come in 2 forms back labor at the base of your spine and contractions. Ever hear of Braxton Hicks contractions? They usually start 3 weeks before you are due. You probably have them now When your stomach contracts around the baby and squeezes hard and firm you'll know to start timing your contractions. When they reach five minutes apart and lasting longer than 60 seconds contact your doctor. If your water breaks go to the hospital. The pulling down sensation through the uterus hurts. Make sure you are packed. Clothing for you and the baby, tennis ball or massager, something to help you relax, books and magazines, music, scrunchy, chapstick
watch with second hand, Tooth brushes, tooth paste, pillows from home (Use colored cases to distiguish from your birth place's linens) Camera with film and batteries
camcorder with charged batteries and accessories
signed copies of your birth plan, water bottles for ice
your own wash cloths, colored ones work better
waterproof pads for the car ride, list of people to call after the baby is born, Baby Book for getting the foot prints done by the nurse when she does the paperwork, socks, special foods or drinks, snacks for labor support ect. Sounds like your ready to go soon.
Congratulations!

I would call first and tell them your symptons then go in if they say to. I know that when i was pregnant with my daughter my contractions were in my back and every time that i walked they pain was horrible as well. If i was you id call first like now and see what they say and if they tell you to go in then go in. Thats about all the information i can tell you. Or you can just go in right now. And if it is false labor they will send you home. But i would be on the safe side and go in now. Your most likely in labor for having the pains that your are having. If your contractions are nomore then 2 minutes apart. Then i would go in. If your having horrible pains that make you stop and sit and are longer then a minute those are contractions. Contractions can also happen in your back. If your having pain in your back i mean like really bad pain thats a contraction. Just time your contractions for a half hour and if you have then every 2 or 3 minutes or so. Your in labor. Good Luck and Congratulations

Since you got that much snow and it will be difficult to get out it might be a good idea to go ahead and leave for the hospital. What if you try to wait it out and are really in labor. You would be more stressed trying to get out in the snow while being in full swing labor. I lost my mucous plug about a day before I had my baby. And the pains you are describing sound like the pains I had just before I had my daughter. Go with your instinct. You know your body and you will know when to go!! Congratulations...I pray all goes well for you!

Some people do describe contractions as being like period cramps. I know that's how they felt to me, and they were coming 5 minutes apart, but barely hurt for HOURS! Here's a link on labor w/ differences between false and real labor:
http://www.webmd.com/content/article/88/99786.htm
When they are coming 5 minutes or less apart you should be headed for the hospital, if there is bad weather, you may not even want to wait that long, just in case!
Here's a link for in case you decide to stay home and end up not being able to make it all the way to the hospital:

CALL YOUR DOC! Each doctor has different opinions on when they want there patient to start heading to the hospital. Contractions are when your belly starts getting really tight, usually it starts at the top of your belly and works it way done as you gets farther into labor, so that could be the cramps you described! Babies tend to move a lot right before labor people say.
Good luck either way!!!

I'd go to the hospitol. There's nothing more important than the health of you and your unborn baby. If you're really not sure, call the doctor and tell him whats going on. He can make a better recomendation based on his medical experience.

You should definitely go in. this is what my first labor was like I had no idea I was in labor until they told me. ah just re read, missed the snow part, I still think you should go but have you tried laying in different postions? If it stops then you are not in active labor. If you dont go and nothing happens you should still call your doctor first thing in the morning.
