Is there any value in peer feedback on performance appraisals?

Many organizations have adopted performace appraisal systems that include peer feedback. With factors such as friendship bias and inter-personal rivalry constantly at play, is this a worthwhile form of quality feedback?

Many companies have some pretty esoteric performance appraisals. The people who finally read the appraisals are at least two levels above the employee, and they are not dumb at all. If you are working hard, it shows. Other employees can figure out how much of your work is a significant contribution. Companies prefer team players and if you get involved in rivalry, or any other time consuming activity, you have made a big mistake. It wastes time, irritates everyone, and causes executives to think carefully about your commitment to your job.
Being a female (long-ago employee) I have had some appraisals that were patently wrong. I went to my boss's boss once to explain the situation, so the VP checked it out with my peers, and had my boss do another appraisal. My boss was trying to cover up the amount of work I was doing compared to his contribution and the VP already knew it. Be careful. Always look like a team player. Also, be careful who you talk to as that gets around also. More people get fired due to their attitude than due to their lack of skills.

I say absolutely not. Peer feedback is inherently subjective, which makes it worthless. Besides, any manager who is doing his/her job knows perfectly well what the social climate of their office is and who on the staff makes it better and who makes it worse.
