Yes, I have seen Grave Of The Fireflies, but i held my expectations too high before watching it and I already expected a lot of people to die when I heard how sad it was going to be. I think it would have been good if I didn't know it was that good, but then again I probaly wouldn't have known it.

Whenever someone asks for a sad anime recommendation, my first response is always "Have you seen Grave of the Fireflies?". It's the definitive sad anime, I think. The sadness of children living through the horrors of war is enough to touch even the stoutest at heart.
Elfen Lied is well written, and if you enjoyed that I'd suggest something with a compelling story like Serial Experiments Lain or Noir. Fullmetal Alchemist is also not a bad choice, if you haven't seen it, and it's very easy to find right now.
I haven't seen Saikano myself, but from what I've heard of it in terms of story and presentation I'd suggest checking out Fafner.
Air is lovely, so very lovely. There are two anime adaptations to Kanon, the new one is a bit similar to Air in terms of how it is presented. Studio Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart features a similar enchanting summer filled with self-discovery that you might enjoy (I did, very much). If you were most impressed with the mystical intrigue of Air, then I'd recomment Miyazaki's rendition of Howl's Moving Castle. In fact, if you haven't seen all of Studio Ghibli's films, it's wise to give them all a try. They're all masterpieces and not to be missed.
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is crazy and quite unique. Nothing is really "near" that title. For this one, I'd suggest checking out something zainy like Hare + Guu. Honey and Clover is also good, although a bit more mature and subdued.
I noticed that x/1999 was listed as a recommendation, and I think that's great. However, that is the licensed north american manga title. The original title of Clamp's manga and the anime is just X. In the states the dvd is available from Geneon/Pioneer as just X. Sometimes it is called X TV among fans.
Well, I hope that at least one of the recommendations works out for you. Here's a list of all the titles I've mentioned:
Grave of the Fireflies
Serial Experiments Lain
Noir
Fullmetal Alchemist
Fafner
Kanon
Whisper of the Heart
Howl's Moving Castle
Honey and Clover
Hare + Guu
And all of Studio Ghibli's films :)
Especially the two mentioned above. You might also like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Castle in the Sky.

You know a great anime that hardly anyone mentions? Read or Die, both the Movie and the OVA Read or Die the TV are great pieces and have their own elements of sadness. A pair of classic anime that are good are Winds of Amnesia and Macross Plus, one dealing with a strange new world after an apocalypse and the other is about a sad love triangle.I would also suggest Wolf's Rain. There's also a relatively new anime that is coming out soon called le portrait de petit Cossette, a sort of dark mystery supernatural anime. I have to agree with the suggestions of X and Witch Hunter Robin both are based on strong stories and have somewhat sad plot lines.

I've never seen this show myself but its represented by the song "Cries In the Dark" by Maaya Sakamoto which was fairly unearthly. It's from Angel Sanctuary which I think would fit in OK with those. I'm watching Elfen Lied myself so I hope its pretty similar to that.

I don't really like sad anime but, Kimi ga nozumu eien was damn depressing. But it's romance. I don't like romance too much. I saw elfen lied too. Sad, but violent. I like violent :D I also liked Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal OVA's. That was just a bloody masterpiece. I cried a lil at the end ;_;
