Alot of people seem to be saying that it's to avoid showing vulnerability, and in some cases I think that's true. In my case, I can say that alot of things bother me, and I try to keep these things to myself when possible. My main reason is usually that I feel if I bring up my opinion on the matter or speak up about something, it may cause those with another attitude about the matter to attack me (verbally or otherwise). In other words, I do it specifically to avoid an argument. And to avoid losing popularity due to having an unpopular opinion. That sounds pretty pathetic, but it's my honest answer to your question.

It's plain old human nature, that's all. We are taught from a young age to never show weakness, to be tough to the outside world. In private you can grieve or what ever, but not in public. It's a cultural thing too, so I can only speak from an American view point. What other cultures have to say will be interesting. Very good question.

I kind of equate this to a sort of masculine/feminine type thingy.
When there is a situation where things call for drastic measures, the masculine has to do something immediately. The person can't just stop to cry or give up or feel any sort of emotion. Later on, when they are out of danger, the person has time to reflect on the situation.
It does bother them, but they can't let it get to them at that particular point in time. They can't give on their guard.
Take the advice from an antipersperant ad.
The pressure might get to you, but never let them see it.
Be confident, confident dry and secure, raise your hand, raise your hand...

sure they do. and it's probably because they do not want the other people to make statements that disagree with how they feel. I would say that these people are shy and more discreet. I on the other hand usually say what is bothering me. This also may not be such a great trait to have ....but sometimes it is better to say it out loud than to keep it in.

People do it all the time. They do it so that the other people don't get the upper hand.
