Is it safe for a 13 year old to go on theAtkins diet? I weight 209, and my doctor said I should loose weight because I think every pound of weight you loose is something like 2/12 pounds of pressure off the hip. If no to the Atkins diet, what do you suggest? I have another surgery coming up in 3 months, so advice is apperciated.

The Atkins works pretty good. The South Beach is also good.
No extreme diet is that good for you, however, the weight you are carrying is much worse for you. Is the surgery for your hip because of the weight? Livestyle change is the best instead of a diet but it is very hard. Easier now than in 5 years though. If the surgery is because of the weight, check out the bariatric websites and do some research. It is not a quick fix but it is often the only way some people can lose weigh. of course if you are 6ft tall, 209 isn't that much overweight.

I would not recommend the atkins diet for an adolescent. You need all your nutrients to deal with the physicological stress of puberty whether you are a boy or a girl. I would suggest smaller portions with adding a comprehensive multivitamin to make up for any losses in vitamins and minerals. Calcium is important at your age as well. You are going to get taller. You didnt say what type of surgery but I am guessing orthepedic because of your comment on the hip. Calcium , iron and other nutrients are key. Cut out the sugars and fried stuff as well as soda (sorry but it plays havoc on bones)

First... DR ATKINS DID NOT DIE OF A HEART ATTACK!!!
second...JUST WHAT FOOD GROUP IS SUPPOSEDLY ELIMINATED FROM ATKINS? PLEASE TELL ME.

Since you are only 13 you could do low carb, just not an exterme version of it. You don't need to do an induction phase, just start out at a higher carb count. if you are cutting out sugar and whie breads, you should see some kind of loss. If you can, try to get an Atkins book and read it.

The atkins diet recommends that you eliminate one of the food groups. It would be better for you to learn what is and isn't good for you and try to eat a balanced diet. Portion control should be the main thing for you and try to consume the recommended amount of calories you shoul talk to a doctor about this and try some exercise.
