It is a VERY old use of the word. In the Middle Ages it ment the effeminant courtiers (who were usualy homosexual) because they were "GAYly" dressed (bright colours ribbons etc...) By Victorian times it ment anyone who "proper" society considered deviant and it was a very common term for prostitutes of BOTH sexes - no matter what their sexual orientation..

Most of them are happy. They have a bubbly personality so the word gay was coined for them.
lt does describe them. Most gay people l know are happy.
