I just saw the headline "Bush approves new military command for Africa" on the front page. I was curious why do we now have a military interest in Africa? Does it have anything to do with China gaining interest in that country as well? Defending Democracy and fighting Communism? Please hold any criticism as I am only curious...

Man, this is the same old pattern that US has. As seen in history, for few decades now, when and where there's a profit of some kind, US gets involved and when people of that nation resist and raise their voices about unjustified acts of US, they will be called terrorist! I'm sure if you dig in Africa's case, you'll be able to find some evidence, AGAIN ! I will be real surprise if US is doing this for the act of good faith and democracy. Well, these reasons has always been used as cover up any way. Its sickening. PLEASE, review the history for last 50-60 years.

What are you talking about? We just set up two democracies: Afghanistan and Iraq. Helping the whole world is far beyond our ability. We can't even control our own borders. As for Africa, it has its share of democracies. The U.S. cannot influence the whole world, and simply put, Africa is not a priority.

Bush wants to have a Command ready after the world allows everyone in Africa to die of aids.

I agree with "Scruffy". Bill Clinton dropped the ball when he let the UN deal with the situation in Rwanda and let over half a million people be slaughtered by machetes. Hopefully, he's looking to restore some order in the corrupt governments in Africa.

Hopefully, it's to help in stopping the slaughter in Darfur. No one listened when Rwandans were being slaughtered. It's time SOMEONE stepped up to the plate...
