Well... if you're putting an OS on it, you'll be given the option to do that when you install the OS. However, if you're just using it for backup, the cleanest way probably is to pick up Norton Partition Magic.

You can use 3rd party software like Disk Director for that. Disk Director is a reliable and easy in use partitioning utility that will allow you to resize, move, copy, split, or merge partitions without losing any data. If you are using a Seagate Hard Disk go to www.seagate.com and download Seagate Disk Manager software. the ISO CD Version and Burn it on a CD.

You can boot from the CD and Partition your Hard Disk using a GUI which is very easy to USE.

When you are install the operating systems you would be prompted for Partition Sizes and File Systems.
