Okay, first, are you really absolutely sure that there is nothing you can do for him or are you just taking the easy way out because it's too hard to do the treatments? Have you tried medications and treatments and trying to save him? Have you tested your water to be sure that it's not the water that's killing him? I beg you to be absolutely sure that you have exhausted every single possible option before taking such a drastic step. That said, proper and humane euthanasia is not an easy thing to do for humans. Flushing is far from humane. Freezing is not humane. This is very graphic, but truly, studies have shown the following to be the most humane thing to do as far as for the pain of the fish and a quick death.
First, you need to give them an anaesthetic overdose. The recommended anaesthetic is tricaine methanesulphonate, which you need to get from a vet. You can also use clove oil. This is very effective and humane as well. Please read the link for the specifics on how to properly adminster these anaesthetics. Next, you need to stun and destroy the brain by mashing the head (really flat, sorry to be so graphic) using a brick, etc. and a stone step or floor. For larger fish you can wrap the body in a cloth for grip, stun the fish by whacking it hard and then destroy the brain using the point of a sharp knife inserted into the head. Wiggle the knife tip about to make sure the brain is completely destroyed while the fish is unconscious. This isn't pretty, but it is the correct way to do it.

Don't mean to answer a question with a question but how do you know he is in pain? I doubt he is in pain and since you know he is dying, remove him from the aquarium, wrap him in something place him on a table and he will probably die within ten minutes.Sorry for your loss.

As mentioned above, a sharp knife to severe the spine just behind the head. Quick and (if done right) painless. By the time the fish's slow brain can respond to any pain caused by a sharp knife cut, it will be dead (well before it can register the pain actually). So yeah, make it quick and remember to use a SHARP knife (not a saw or something).

Did I mention a sharp knife? Probably.

BTW don't cut your fingers...with the sharp knife. ;)

Euthanasia. The quickest way is driving a blade into his spine just before the neck. It's a little brutal but that is really the quickest way to put a fish to rest since there's no method of putting fishes to sleep.

Get clove oil from GNC store. Shake it up in a gatorade bottle with tank water & put it in a bucket. Put him in the bucket with the mixture. He'll fall asleep in about 30 seconds. After about a minute, pour it up with cheap 80 proof liquor & let him sit for 10-15 minutes... He'll be dead without pain. Its the most humane way to kill a fish. Its the equivilant of lethal injection. The clove oil puts him to sleep, the alcohol arrests his system.

i'm sorry, I don't think there is a way to ease your fishes' pain. You could always see if there is anyhting your vet can do about it. Other than that, just try to think positive and try to enjoy the last few days you have with him.

take him out of his tank, set him on the floor, then kick him against the wall as hard as you can. i dont know how humane this is, but it sounds pretty cool. then go and join him in the great beyond.

Euthanasia, yes, as far as i know, put him in a container with ice, he'll gently nod off as his metabolism slows down then you can dispose of him

When my chiclids have died we usualy take him out and put him in the freezer. We heard that it is the quickest way to finish the process. But it really takes a strong stomach to do that.
