I'm watching law and order & it always seems people bury guns or throw them in water or something. Isn't there a way to completely destroy a gun? like burn it or melt it or something?

destroying it would be much too cumbersome. you would have to spend a lot of time scratching up the barrel and completely removing the serial number, or somehow heat it up enough to melt it (which would take much more than a campfire).

if you had enough time to do all that, you might as well just get rid of it in a smarter way than the criminals on TV. if it were me, i would go to a place that i would not be expected to go, like a lake far away from where i live or something. the point is, don't trash it near the scene of the crime, and don't toss it in the dumpster behind your building.

You don't have to destroy it. But you DO have to thoroughly remove the serial number, and you have to thoroughly scratch up the inside of the barrel (to prevent ballistics matching). And then, it's best to take it apart and throw the pieces away in a number of different spots.

Sure you could melt it, if you have a furnace that gets to 1370 °C the melting point of steel.

Sure you can melt it -- but it takes an awful lot of heat. An industrial blast furnace should suffice.

yes there is. They can dismantle it, melt and recycle the metal into something more useful. Maybe a spoon or a fork :)

You could melt it at a high enough temp, but hey. It's TV!

Smash in the barrel with a hammer, so it can't be shot again....no ballistics?
