Clothes are the most useful gift you can get. Babies grow so fast so clothes are the best bet.

Here are some idea:

Diapers. But you don't want to get newborn. Get size 1, 2 and/or 3. Also, try not to get much newborn stuff. Get things in larger sizes than she will need. She will grow out of newborn sizes fast. Get onsies in different sizes, booties, sleepers, wipes (unscented and make sure they are soft), baby lotion, baby oil, baby shampoo, baby body wash, a baby bathtub, baby washcloths and bibs. Or anything else you see that looks like it will be useful.

Try not to buy toys. The baby will not be interested in that for a few months and it will be a waste of money right now.

Get mom some chocolate, Tylonal and Chicken Soup for the Mothers Soul (A book) :)

The best present I've ever seen, and I wish I had someone who would do this for me, was diapers. But not just one pack, my friend's grandmother bought diapers for the first six months of her granddaughter's life. Every time mom needed diapers, she would call her a day or two before she ran out, and would have another package of diapers delivered to the door. Plus it gave the giver a chance to see the baby all the time. Good luck!

Congrats to your friend! All of the answers so far have been on target! The gift of your time would be most valuable. If you're close to this friend, set up a schedule with her to relieve her of watching baby so she can get some rest. Doing household chores like making meals, doing dishes, sweeping, etc. could be plugged in. Don't overload yourself, though. Another way is to make "coupons" with your phone number and what you can do for a certain period of time (1 hour). Get some other friends to make their own "coupons" so the new mom feels supported. She can "cash" them in whenever she feels stressed. You can organize a meal delivery plan with other friends so she and her family have a good, hot meal at least once during the week.

If you're not close, then gift certificates to baby stores or spas would be welcome.

A personalized gift like a baby blanket or frame with the baby's name on it. Or to be practical, diapers!! All new moms love getting diapers as gifts once they realize how expensive they are and how quickly they go!!

Whatever you do, don't buy baby clothes. Everyone usually gives mothers clothes for the baby, and tons of clothes won't get you very far. Try looking for a nice high-chair or something of the sort. Diapers are a must, and you might not think it would be, but when someone gives new mothers diapers in huge quantities, their are forever thankful.

I attended a baby shower were one of the gifts was a three tiered "cake " made from diapers. It was ever so cute. And don't forget to give the mommy something for herself, anything will work.

Onesies are always needed. Also, a basket filled with Vaseline, newborn nail clippers, a soft bristled brush, washclothes and baby wipes would be very nice.

One can never go wrong with a package of diapers either......you go through so many.

Congrats to your friend!!

Diapers is always #1 need now gift.

I always give a baby blanket that has the child's first and middle name and birthdate embroidered on it that they can have as a keepsake.

Definitely diapers and wipes, gripe water, shampoo, powder, diaper rash cream, receiving blankets, towels, and more diapers. Oh, and baby bottle brushes and pacifiers. Several.
