Does it go all the way back to Mohammad? Because some conservatives will tell you Islam is an inherently violent religion. Why then did America last for 200 years before suffering a single terrorist incident from Muslims?

America is not threatened by Muslims not now not ever, its just a propaganda prepared by the businessmen in the US government and paid by american tax money to gain control over the OIL in Muslim countries.
Lets say Iraq we were informed that Iraqi own mass destruction weapons and they were one of the strongest armies in the world.but the truth was completely different,(no weapons no army).
As a result the businessmen in US goverement has full control of the OIL,regardless of our 3000 thousand troopers that we lost,
Also dont expect to do all this without gaining anti-american movements and actions

Thanks to advances in transportation, communications, and other technologies, the world is getting to be a much smaller place. Muslims are a proud people, and when they see the West has vastly outperformed them in all areas, it comes as a shock.

I read some statistics on the Arab world (please don't quote me.) It was something to the effect that if you combined the GNP of the entire Arab world, and subtracted oil revenues, the GNP would be roughly equivalent to that of Norway. Another statistic was something to the effect that more books are translated into Spanish in a year that have ever been translated into Arabic.

The Arab world doesn't produce any famous scientists, doctors, etc. 500+ years ago, the Muslim world was the pinnacle of enlightenment, but they have been in freefall decline ever since.

Essentially, many Muslims are unable to look inward and question why their culture has been surpassed by the West; they think that it must have been because they have been wronged. Some who think this way are extremists, and they want "revenge" for these supposed wrongdoings.

This is a clash of civilizations, nothing less. It was unavoidable and inevitable. In the light of the modern age, Islamic culture must adapt or die, and it is dying. After seeing the beheadings, suicide bombings, lack of women's rights, intolerance to other religious beliefs, I say "let it die." It doesn't belong here. Let it pass into the ages where it belongs.

To answer your question, the USA has the bulleye painted on it due to the fact that it epitomizes Western culture.

The Marines' Hymn says, "From the halls of Montezuma [Mexico] to the shores of Tripoli [Libya]" From the time of the crusades until the 1800s, pirates from Muslim northern Africa plundered ships in the Mediterranean Sea. In 1805 the US Marines and Navy fought these countries to free US citizens imprisoned by Barbary pirates, and to stop the piracy that was so prevalent there.
But terrorism as such? The first I remember is the 1979 hostage crisis with Iran; I guess you could call the takeover of an embassy terroristic; it simply isn't done by civilized people, you know.

America probably instigated the attacks of modern day terrorists with the war in Iraq. If you bomb A house and kill everyone but the eldest son the guy has no reason left to live except to exact revenge upon his tormentors.

if, on the other hand, you are talking about pre-Iraq terrorist attacks, It was probably the result of the US backed dictators in El Salvador. he used US funding to such inventive uses as chopping off the heads of his political opponents and then putting their severed genitals in their mouth. They also gunned down 4 priests and left their bloody bodies to be found in their church garden (genitals intact, thank god. That's not even remotely funny). This doesn't scratch the surface of all the committed atrocities.
In response the Salvadoran people formed Hamas (meaning "brothers and sisters of El Salvador"). Because the US literally paid for the atrocities in El Salvador and even went so far as to take in some of the more promising death squads for special "population control training" at fort Benning, Hamas started to hate us to. Go figure.

When we decided to occupy the mid-east with our military, and supporting brutal dictatorships in that region. Starting with Nixon and Kissinger inparticular. It got worse under Carter when he switched his m.e policies with more engagement. And, then there was Reagan which made it 100 times worse and progressively so til we get GWB. Most Americans think that muslims became radically anti-American over night and that there was no good reason for it. It's obvious no American has ever had bombs dropped on them with American company logos. It's obvious Americans are kept in the dark about their own government's foreign relations. I can't stand the radical Muslims, but their hatred for our occupation of their countries is understandable. I'd hate it too if some foreign country came over here and supported a brutal dictatorship or Royal family for our natural resources.

What about in 1805 when US shipping was terrorized by pirates from the Barbary Coast? In fact, ironically, when US sailors were captured at the surrender of the USS Philadelphia, the prisoners weren't treated as prisoners of war and turned them into slave laborers without much sustenance.

The truth is Islam has been a comparatively benign religion - as far as religions go. Jews and christians lived throughout the middle east under their protection for many hundreds of years, particularly in jerusalem, and many still do today.

Well they weren't too happy with the creation of Israel in 1948, but what really set them off was the American interference in Middle Eastern politics in the 1970s and 1980s as part of the Cold War with the USSR.

Well, we've had problem with the Middle East for quite some time. The first one I can think of was the Iran Hostage Crisis. Why did it happen? To be honest, I don't know. But I'm sure somehow, someway, someone blames Bush.
