They are my favorite team too, and I have been sad to watch so many players go. They used to compete with the Yankees in the mid 90's, but now rely on constantly turning over young talent. Baseball is a business, and they feel that they are maximizing their profits, while still putting a competitive team on the field. I think the biggest problem now is that such a large portion of money goes to a total of three people on the team.

The simple answer is that they are owned by a corporation and like most corporations, their main objective is to maximize shareholder wealth or profits.

If a corporation invests money in player salaries, they do so with the hope that it will increses their revenue stream in any of several ways - more subscribers to T.B.S., larger crowds in attendance, making the playoffs and having more home games , an increase in merchandise sales and a general increase in interest in their product which is the Atlanta Braves!

Having won the N.L. East 14 times ( I think) and therefore making the playoffs 14 straight years, the newness of winning and making the playoffs faded away until the revenue stream decreased year after year. Spending money on player salaries did no longer result in an increased revenue stream. Of course, it did not help that they only won the World Series once over that span! I actually remember watching them in the playoffs one year to an amazing amount of empty seats, which was an indication of general fan interest.

An owner like Ted Turner might have continued spending money on players to win the World Series with less regard to turning a profit beacuse of his love for the city of Atlanta, its people and baseball in general but a corporation never will.

i think they want to be the opposites of the red sox and yankees. kind of like the patriots. get good players who believe in the team concept and pay them a decent salary and reward them with wins. just like new england, only they have been doing it first. and so you don't pay so much money for someone who ends up draining your wallet like a-rod. they have worked hard on the pitching this off season and i'm interested to see what will happen. they have a few solid starters and now they are strengthening the bull pen this year and they already have a great closer. if the hitting can continue and the defense can just not lose games, we should have a chance to win the pennant this year. why not???????? go braves

The honest answer...because Baseball is a business, and that Braves make so much money off loyal fans every year, that they're content with winning the division every year. Now that they're maybe the 3rd best team in their division, they might be forced to open up the pocket-book in order to keep the fans happy.

I don't know what team YOU'RE talking about, but it couldn't be the Braves. They have so much invested in the players that they have (giving them multi-year mega-buck deals), that they cannot afford to sign top free agents anymore or acquire expensive players in deals. Atlanta has one of the highest payrolls in the National League.

I really don't know but my friend says they are saving their money for next year and they will get a lot of great players. By the Way, He loves the Braves.

Because Ted Turner doesn't own them anymore. They used to be in the top 5 for payroll, but not with a corporate owner. Hope they get a second baseman for this year and a 1st baseman too.

I feel their current owners, Time-Warner, is doing this on the cheap. They will be looking to sell the franchise within time.

It seems that they have been getting the most out of what they pay.
