Dust doesn't slow down a computer. However, dust can cause it to over heat. The excessive heat can cause hardware failures which could lead to performance issues. Cleaning out dust isn't hard, and it's recommend that you do it every six months on average.

You'll need a vacuum, a can of compressed air, and maybe a screwdriver to get your case open. Turn your computer off and unplug it. Let it cool down for a few minutes. Open up the case and lay it on a flat surface so you can easily see the motherboard. VERY IMPORTANT: from this point on, always have your arm resting on the computer case. This will ground you so you don't fry a component with static electricity. If you have an ESP strap of pad, use it. Otherwise, always touch the computer case with some part of your arm. Carefully use the vacuum to suck out excess dust. Don't touch any of the components with the vacuum or your hand. If there's any dust that won't come out, use the can of compressed air. If you've never used it, you want to make sure the can is upright, and use very short bursts. If the can starts getting too cold to hold comfortably, let it rest for a few minutes. Now if there is excessive dust trapped behind any of the fans attached to the computer case that won't come out with the compressed air, remove the fans with the screwdriver, vacuum them out, then reattach making sure they are still facing the same way. Once you're done, put the case back together and plug everything back in.

If you get enough dust in there it will make a blanket of heat. This heat created by the dust can slow your system/machine down PC's like to run as cool as possible for optimum efficiency.
It is best to take off the cover at least once a year and blow the dust out with compressed air.

Dust inside your computer is not a good thing. Purchase that Canned Air or use the small attachment on your vacuum cleaner and clean it out. Dust can make your fans work harder thus putting a strain on your system. Dust can also block air getting into your computer making it run hotter and could very well ruin your motherboard. Take the back off and clean it out.

The dust will not directly slow down Ur comp but it defiantly will block air flow hampering Ur system cooling which will lead to a serious problem of overheating leading to slow processor and in extreme cases melt down of Ur hardware

no dust will not slow down your computer, it works fine as it is, it could create problems if you try and move the dust....

if the dust is physically blocking an airvents or stopping a fan from spinning then i would clean it out, other wise just leave it be....

Dust shouldn't slow it down at all. It may short if enough collects in there and then you'll have real problems.

yes, it will.
It could either fry it (you have to have a TON of dust)
also, it will make everything run hotter, which means it will be slower.
Buy some canned air (most computer stores have it)
take off your case door, take it outside, put it down on someplace safe (like a porch) and blow it all away!

Yes it can. You need to take the back off and use a can of compressed air to clean it all out of there.

I just had to do this to mine. It makes the fan run and you can hear it.

I do this because a computer repairman told me it was safe to do and would prolong the life of my computer..

It may block airflow, leading to overheating and a shortened processor life, but it will not run slower. If your computer is running slow, it may have a trojan or other virus-like infection. Run Ad-Aware or similar to check.
