I have the IDE drive from my old laptop. It ran XP Pro SP2 and the disk is NTFS. When I try to read it on another computer, I can't find the files in the My Documents folder. I know they are there. I found a utility that finds them. It costs $100, and I wonder if there's anything else out there that works for less. I understand I could recover the files by booting the system with Linux, too. There are lots of deleted file recovery utilities out there, but I'm looking for something that allows me to overcome the security settings on the files on the drive. I've tried the DOS attrib -r command and it works on some files but not the ones in My Documents folder.

Try the above link. Its Get Data Back NFTS. I have used it before and its very effective. There is not much difference in price but i am sure this would work for you.

Reg the permission when you recover using such software all the permission would be wiped off.

I mean to say there wont be any restrictions on the files you have recovered.

If you still need further clarifications please get back to me.

You could also just get a NTFS Administrator Password Cracker CD, boot from it, remove the password, and make life ALOT easier for you.

you can use the nt bacup utility.backup the folder that you want to access, and then restore ,you must uncheck the box that says"Reserve Security settings"this usually works, but if the files are encrypted, then you may have a problem.they may not be recoverable.
