MP3 is the compressed audio format that really sparked the move from CDs to portable digital music players. It's audio-only, and it sounds really muddy in the high range. It is, however, the only universal audio format on the market, as all digital music players will work with the MP3 format (hence the term "MP3 player", even though most high-end players will default to a much better audio format).
MP4 is a container format that can combine multiple video, audio, photo, and text files into one single file. Files that have the M4V extension are MP4-compliant video files, and if they have the M4A extension they are MP4-compliant audio files (like the default AAC format that's used on iPod players).

that is amazingly user-friendly. mp3 is a music report and mp4 is a video report. An i-pod video is many times reffered to as an mp4 participant. at the same time as a Ipod is only a better customary mp3 participant because it performs music records.
