as a server of 13 plus years i can only tell you this: 1) be yourself...your customers can tell if you're being fake. you'll have more fun and it'll feel natural for you. 2) even if you're slammed, pause a moment and give your guests a smile and eye contact. ask them how they're doing and listen to them. if you run up to the table acting in a hurry they will sense it and only stress you out more..relax! 3) this should have been #1 but..treat your fellow workers (escpecially the kitchen guys) as good as you treat the guests. they are just as important to your success and hey..they're in the same boat as you and probably have a crappier job than you! 4) always remeber that this isn't brain surgery. do your best but remember that niether you or your guest will probably remember this particular night 1 week later. 5) repeat orders back to your guests..it'll help solve any misunderstandings and they'll feel that they're being listened to. 6) pay equal attention to both people when serving a couple..don't make the other jealous! 7) prioritize! just because you've been sat many tables at once doesn't mean that they all have to be served at the same time! some want slower service and some won't even notice..learn to distinguish who's in a hurry or wants more attention and who could care less if you check back with them..a key to good service and saving yourself much grief!

Learn to memorize better.
If you are able to look a table of four to six people in the eye without writing anything down and remember thier orders by thier faces and eyes, you will get 20 - 50 % tips most of the time if you work in a half way upscale restaurant.

Once you learn to read people, you will get better. I hate having a waitress that is so fake or rude. be friendly and helpful, even to the people that aren't very nice...it makes you the better person.

It will happen. Maybe there is someone in your restaurant that you respect. Ask them. Have them give you ideas. I don't know what kind of concept you work in. But, pay attention to the details and consolidate your steps!
