1. I would use a combination of animetronics and CGI to modernize the special effects (ie. the scorpions, the vulture, Cerberus, Pegasus). But, you have to remember back in 1981, Harry Hausen's special effects in "Clash of the Titans" were considered absolutely cutting edge.
2. Mortals were portrayed as detailed clay figurines that the Olympians were able to manipulate directly; for example, Perseus was taken from his home on the island of Seraphos and set into the city of Joper, by the Goddess Thetis, when she set the clay model of him into the model of the coliseum on Mt. Olympus. She also said that she would make her wishes clear to her followers through "dreams and omens". Zeus punished her son Kalabos for capturing and killing his entire herd of winged horses (except for Pegasus) by setting his clay model down into the model of the coliseum and saying that he would become physically disfigured for his wickedness.
3. Zeus was ruthless when punishing mortals that defied his will (ordered the death of King Acrisius, his subjects and the destruction of his city, Argos) and he was rather callous in regard to the other gods who disagreed with his choices (his wife Hera had no recourse when he attempted to seduce other women such as Thetis and Danae; ignored Thetis's anguish when she plead for mercy for her son). However, he did respect Athena's wishes, when he asked her to give Bubu, her owl to Perseus and she refused. Zeus was generous with his son and did what he could to interfere on his behalf.
4. Perseus portrayed several valuable character traits, such as: bravery, loyalty, resourcefulness, confidence in his own abilities, and persistance.

That's a tough one. There is a certain aura that comes with the first one. Even if the graphics aren't too good, it still has its legend movie status. From what I've heard, they aren't sticking to the original Greek story too much, so there might be some disappointment there. For those that haven't seen the original, and don't know the story already, I'd say it's worth watching, but for the die-hards out there, I'd say wait for the RedBox.

1). I'd use CGI instead of stop-animation.
2). Humans are doll-sized statuettes that the gods play with.
3). Favoritism for one. He's compassionate only to his own son, and imperious to the gods.
4). This is a deeper question and you really ought to watch the movie to find out. It's quite good, worth the rental.
