it's easiest to convert each number into an improper fraction first:

2 1/4 is the same as 9/4
1 1/2 is the same as 3/2
3 1/3 is the same as 10/3

Then, just multiply across:

9/4 x 3/2 x 10/3

Take the numerators and the denominators seperately:

9 x 3 x 10 = 270

4 x 2 x 3 = 24

So the answer is 270/24 - but this can be reduced (6 is a common factor in the numerator and denominator) to 45/4 or 11.25

I'd do it this way:

Say the whole numbers, fractions and operations to yourself.

This then becomes:

Two and a quarter, multiplied by, one and a half, multiplied by three and a third.

You need to first understand that the fraction as written 1/4 means (one divided by four), 1/2 means (one divided by two), 1/3 means (one divided by three) etc.

There are two ways to solve the problem, the first way is by using fractions, the second way is by converting the fractional numbers to decimal numbers.

Using fractions can be hard, unless you know how to find the lowest common denominator (LCD).

The ' means repeater, as the calculator can't show all of the decimal places.

Now the sum reads:

Just whack the numbers into you friendly calculator for an answer of 11.24

The difference in answers is due to the calculator not being able to accept the correct number of decimal places for the reciprocal of three.
