sounds like you may have spyware on your computer...run Adaware SE personal (download from www.download.com if you havent already got it)..and also Spybot Search & Destroy

This would happed when you Type an URL which doesnt have any hosted site. Or if you miss type popular URL's

Consider your example. you have tried www.gamespot.com. Say if the domain name is expired by any chance you would be redirected to a dynamically created page which would have links to some gaming sites and some spam sites.

Becuase seeing Game in your url they would know ur interested in a Game.

There might be one more reason. If your system is infected with Spyware or Virus you might also get redirected to such websites.

If the above case go to www.download.com and download and install Ad-aware Personal Edition and Spyboat Search and Destroy. Update them and run a complete scan.

If you need further clarifications please get back to me.

You've been hacked, my dear.

Don't worry. I'm sure your computer's salvageable. You just need to run some anti-spyware.

The best practice for this is to first (of course) get the anti-spyware program. Spybot and Ad-Aware Home Edition are both free, and you can download them off the net.

Once, you've done that, restart your computer. As the computer starts up again, press F8 to get into Safe Mode (This stops the nasties from starting up and interfering with the anti-spyware.) Then run the program.

You might have to repeat this a few times to get the pc completely clean. It's kinda like shampooing your hair: Lather, Rinse, Repeat!

Sounds like a browser highjacker is redirecting your browser's requests. Check that the properties of the favorite shortcut has the correct www.gamespot.com address. Have you loaded any fancy FREE?? toolbars lately in IE? Could be adware/spyware. Download Ad-aware SE free edition and run it. Here's the URL: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5

i can think of 2 things:
1. You have spyware on ur computer and u need to get rid of them
2. maybe u are writing the address wrong, try searching gamespot on google and see what it'll find.
