I keep hearing both that it does and that it does not, even on the internet it says both@!
What is the truth?

It depends on the type of brick and/or mortar. The ivy sends rootlets into anything it can to enable it to climb and stay there. It you really want ivy you could use a lattice and remove any ivy that tries to cling to the brickwork.

The answer is yes when the ivy attaches to the brick the root/anchors go into the mortar and it cracks it allowing moisture to remain closer to the inside od the house which may lead to mold/mildew growth as well it makes it easier for insects to get in and if selling your house ivy will deter some potential buyers when its brick attached it kinda rots the house in a way like it does when it grows on a fence. As well having ivy on a lattice to close to the house can lead it to grow attaching to the brick and once it grows on the house its hard to get rid of without serious killing chemicals happened to a house i had ivy grew up on the brick cracked the mortar seals and took a strong chemical to kill everytime i pulled it it came back in a week or so but that house sold and i dont know if they have the problem now or not so hope that helped

It does damage the mortar around the brick. Those little things connect onto anything and everything. Keep English Ivy away from your house. It grows faster than most weeds.

Over a period of time, the roots of the ivy bore into the mortar and bricks, causing some damage... Both are right... time is the answer for the damage though
