The original Backup—seen in the pilot and early episodes—was a white and brown 2.5 year old American bulldog named Gordo.
The current Backup is a peachy-cream colored pit bull named Lefty.

Backup definitely looks like a pit bull to me. He might be a Stratfordshire Terrier, which is the english equivalent of a pitbull.
Backup has also been played by more than one dog, but they all look pit to me.
