Let's start with acceptance: The first thing that an alcoholic must do is accept that he or she has a problem with alcohol. Once that step has been taken, the alcoholic can begin to make progress in solving the problem.

I think the word you are looking for in number 2 is "coping." Coping is basically dealing with life. For an alcoholic, who has managed to avoid dealing with life by drinking, coping is a skill that must be learned.

Alcoholics are generally intelligent and sensitive people, and as such are complicated. The program of Alcoholics Anonymous is a very direct, uncomplicated process. There are such suggestions as "Don't pick up the first drink." Rather a simple idea, but for people who out of a habit of denial. are accustomed to constructing elaborate logical systems to explain how they got to where they are, that's what's needed.

As for number 4, that's a new one on me. I haven't heard that in 30 years of sobriety.

Please feel free to e-mail if you have any more questions.

You really should Email your first answerer, and totally forget what the second answerer said.

Just comparing the sentiment between the first answerer and the second, it's clear that #1 is calm, cool and collected.

#2 is angry, mean and full of pride that he can drink, meaning that drinking is still very much a part of his life and he will hold on to that forever....

I am clean and sober 17 years through the program of Alcoholics Anonymous.
I am successful.
I am not angry.
I am free.

Please, Email #1 and forget the sick, twisted, stinkin' thinkin' #2.

The first drink thing is for retards. Their logic is 'if there's no first drink then there can't be a 15th'. Yeah, this from the people who brought you the logic 'If you don't go within 50 miles of a gun, you can't kill anyone with a gun".

Only idiots and weak minded people subscribe to this. I used to drink too much, so instead of going to a loser group know what I did? I stopped drinking so much. Now I go to parties and drink but don't get out of control. Been working for me for 13 years now, never had a problem.

AA is for people who have absolutely no control over their life and are complete fuvking retards.

Now rate this thumbs down because you're pissed I can have a few drinks and you can't. come on, prove me right alchie! Hahaha

Look at the other answers and how pissed those alcoholics get. Deep down they are out of control angry people and they need groups like AA, much like animals need a zoo.

Don't quit understand why you are asking this question here. Wouldn't a board that dealt with addiction be more helpful to you?
