Betta. Colorful. Flowy, showy fins. And the absolute only fish that can go in a small tank, and by that, I mean at least a one gallon. I'd prefer bigger though....

How massive is the tank? Small isn't a length. Does it have a clear out? A heater? in case you do have a clear out and a heater i ought to signify a beta. they're user-friendly to look after and maximum of them have beautiful coloring.

easiest answer would be bettas

by small tank how small? for 5 gallons you could do like 3 smaller gouramis like dwarf gouramis, sparkling gouramis, croaking gouramis.

there are cute little guys called darios but they are seldom available at your local pet shop.

killifish do well in small tanks. they can be a bit pricey and back to that pet shop thing -- usually not there.

dwarf puffers would be a good choice. they are popular now and easily obtainable. in a small tank they would only go well with other dwarf puffers.

Betta (male)

you have to keep them alone they are fighting fish and will attack any other fish you put in the tank (very Territorial)

Define small tank.

Don't get a goldfish. At 10 gallons needed per three inches of goldfish you are beyond small tank when it reaches adult size. That person gave dumb advice.

Bettas....they are beautiful to look at and easy to care for. I have a red one and they other is pink and red. They are very beautful and both are over a year old. I bought them both at WalMart!
