The parade day. Sure there will be families there but in Southie, its just one big party the entire time. We did it one year and we were drinking the whole day. Join some house parties. I walked into a few and people were just welcoming (for the most part).

Its just one big fat drunk party during the parade!

I agree with the posters above that Saturday is the day to go, however, as it falls on a weekend, expect that things will get started the night before.

One thing to know about the festivities in Boston is that, in addition to getting a lot of people out on the town, the bars don't treat the day like any other. Expect long lines (and the need to show up VERY early in the morning at favorites like the Black Rose to even get in) covers and the usual "specials" that go along with holidays like St. Pat's and New Years (i.e. higher prices, limited selections.)

Overall it's a good time, but plan accordingly.

State workers in Mass have off St. Patty's Day...Evacuation Day is what we call it. We threw the British out of Boston during the Revolutionary War and have celebrated that since. Saturday will be the big one.

HI

Saturday would be the better day. You will still have Sunday to recover. Besides the bars will have more on St. Patty's Day than on parade day.

Like any self respecting irish person visiting Boston for Paddys Day the day itself (saturday) is for drinking singing and having one hell of a party, the day after is the recovery party - enjoy

Get there on friday, then have more time for fun. Don't forget traffic everyone will drive down on saturday.

I'd come Saturday - there'll be lots of hoopin' and hollerin' at all the pubs that night.
